Enfoldings & Disclosures

‘Enfoldings & Disclosures’ - an exhibition of new interactive artwork and story-sharing project by George Khut with Caitlin Newton-Broad, David Morris-Oliveros, and sculptures by Lisa Jones, University of Technology Sydney, UTS Gallery, March 11th - April 12th, 2008.

Opening Tuesday 11 March 6-8pm

‘Enfoldings & Disclosures’ will showcase anatomically inspired sculptures and drawings by Lisa Jones alongside ‘The Heart Library Project’, a new interactive work by George Khut, with collaborators Caitlin Newton-Broad, Greg Turner and David Morris-Oliveros.

‘The Heart Library Project’ combines a body-sensing interactive video and LED lighting system (courtesy of Xenian architectutal lighting) with a participatory drawing process, inviting people to explore links between mental and physical experience through a combination of hands-on biofeedback interaction and multi-media story telling.

Khut, an Associate of the UTS Creativity and Cognition Studios, has worked closely with engineers to develop an interactive interface that uses bio-medical technologies to transform heart rhythms into a changing video and audio artwork. Audiences are invited to test out how the work can respond to different qualities of attention and emotion.

Following their interaction with Khut’s sensor-driven, immersive environment, individual audience members are invited by Caitlin Newton-Broad during Open Studio sessions (see details right) to share their experience with other visitors by documenting the range of sensations, feelings and images they felt during their participation. The resulting drawings and videos will be exhibited as part of a continually evolving ‘library’ of experience accounts.

Alongside The Heart Library Project, Lisa Jones’ objects and works on paper evoke the corporeal through tactile, elaborate forms, and uncanny depictions of interior spaces rendered visible by medical technologies. A series of drawings titled On my mind respond to the experience of undertaking MRI scans as creative research. Mobilising her body as tool, material and content, Jones’ works investigate the tension between embodied feeling and psychological reflection inherent to the way we understand and construct a sense of self.
