This is the portfolio and blog of George Poonkhin Khut, an artist and interaction-designer based in Sydney, Australia.
I make artworks that invite people to explore and reflect on their experience of themselves and the world around them – using interactive technologies and audience participation [download CV].
I use the interactive technologies and direct face-to-face interactions to explore aspects of our lives that are often hidden from view (i.e. physiology, psychology, social history, consumption etc..). These works emphasise hands-on exploration (learning by doing, moving, sensing), and the role of witnessing, reflection and story-sharing as ways by which we make sense of our lives.
I’ve been making and exhibiting body-focussed interactive art works since 2002 when I commenced my Doctoral research into biofeedback artworks at the University of Western Sydney (exegesis completed in 2006). These artworks combine heart rate and breath-sensing technologies with interactive sound and visuals. They invite people to explore interactions between their physiology and psychology using electronics to measure and translate body signals into sound and light compositions, and social settings that encourage quiet attentiveness and intimate discussions around themes of self-hood, health and mortality.
In recent years, I’ve been working increasingly with processes of interpretation through the recording of interviews and maps made by audiences, and I’m currently exploring the extension of these processes outward, beyond ‘the body’ towards a consideration of aspects of our social, cultural and geographic situation.
